Transition

transitionStudents transition into Challenge Academy from a variety of sources – school districts, agencies, residential placements and boot camps.  In order to make the transition as seamless as possible, Challenge Academy meets with the student, parent and referring source prior to admittance.  The purpose of this cord is to familiarize the family with our program requirements and also provide an introduction to the facility and staff.  Transportation, medication needs, academic and behavior goals, and therapeutic requests are formalized at this time.

Challenge Academy totally supports the theory that “we are the beginning, not the end.”  When students exhibit consistent appropriate behaviors over a specified period of time, they may choose to return to their home school.  The Behavior Coordinator, teachers, parents, referring school and student meet to develop a plan for reentry.  This could include but is not limited to one specific class or a partial day prior to becoming a full time student.  Challenge Academy provides weekly and eventually monthly follow up services.  A “pull back” program is also available at no charge to the districts for students who may need to revisit Challenge Academy for a day or two to receive intensive support.  Included in this cord are transition services for students who are in need of a more restrictive placement.  Behavior Coordinators work in partnership with the referral source and the new placement to assist in coordinating a transition in which the student loses little or no school time.

The third transition cord is providing services for students who are graduating from high school.  The focus of our career education program is to ensure that the student is equipped to be successful the next phase of life.  This includes but is not limited to: coordination with agencies such as OVR and MHMR, post high school training or education plan, and life skills packet to include resume, application examples, references, social security card, birth certificate, driver’s licenses, diploma and transcript.  Challenge Academy is committed to providing life long guidance to all graduates who choose to return for assistance.
